All are welcome!\nUU Society of Schenectady | 1221 Wendell Ave.\, Schenectady\, NY 12308 \nThich Nhat Hanh has established a tradition\, on the eve of the Lunar New Year\, of offering the sangha a simple poetic couplet in calligraphy that can inspire and nurture our mindfulness practice throughout the year. For the Year of the Dragon\, 2024\, Spacious Mind\, Inclusive Heart have been offered for our practice. These verses seem particularly relevant to the times in which we find ourselves. As Sr. Chan Duc wrote: “ . . . we have a chance to look at how much room there is in our heart and how much space there is in our mind. We need a spacious mind in order to deepen our understanding and with more understanding we grow the capacity of heart to include all.” \n***** \nRichard Brady (True Dharma Bridge) is a retreat leader\, writer\, educational consultant\, and coordinator of the Wake Up Schools. He is a founder of the Mindfulness in Education Network\, an international organization with 1\,700 participants. In 2001\, he received lamp transmission from Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh to be a Dharma teacher in his tradition with a special focus on cultivating mindfulness in young people. In 2008 Richard’s spouse Elisabeth Dearborn\, True Lotus Color\, and he founded the Mountains and Rivers Mindfulness Community in southeast Vermont\, US\, where they now live. Richard has been a friend and support to Kingfisher Sangha for many years and we welcome him back for this Day of Mindfulness. \n***** \nPlease bring with you:\n* a cushion if you use one for meditation\n* a vegetarian lunch\n* a yoga mat and/or blanket for total relaxation\n* layered clothes and socks. Please join us as we gather to read and discuss Sutras\, chants\, practice Touching the Earth\, recite the Five Mindfulness Trainings\, and other practices in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. If you have a copy of the book Chanting From the Heart\, please bring it. Don’t worry if you don’t!  Check the newsletter for the Zoom link. \nOur next meeting is on November 4. Please bring light vegetarian foods\, refreshments\, or desserts. \nWe will be taking all the individual items that were gathered for the monastics at Blue Cliff Monastery and getting it ready to be handed out to them!  Individual items may be purchased and delivered to Dorothy BEFORE the December 14 gathering **OR** you can bring gifts with you!  We specifically are looking for hats\, gloves\, and socks in BROWN or BLACK in color. You may also choose to give other gifts such as toiletries\, candy\, and stocking-stuffing items to bring them joy. \nDo you want to contribute\, but don’t have time to drop off items or go shopping?\nHere is a gift giving guide with easy purchase options for the monastics. You are absolutely welcome to purchase from your local shops! In fact\, you can probably find good sales and deals if you are out shopping in-person.  And we don’t need exact items on this list. For the December meeting\, please read Chapters 3 and 4. \nAbout the book: A holistic system for gaining and maintaining the stability of mind needed for personal and social transformation\, even in the midst of trauma—with simple\, body-based exercises grounded in neuroscience and mindfulness\, inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh. Time and time again\, even in places where trauma is commonplace\, Rosen has seen that a regulated nervous system allows an individual to move from overwhelm and despair to stability and engagement. The Plum Village approach to well-being cultivates resilience while recognizing the unique social and ecological challenges of our times. \nThe sangha has funds to help you purchase the book if you need them.
