This September meeting is a slight variation from before. \n\nPlease see the Kingfisher Sangha newsletter for the ZOOM link.\n\nWe will begin reading The Art of Communicating by Thich Nhat Hanh\, (166 pages). How do we say what we mean in a way that the other person can really hear How can we listen with compassion and understanding? Communication fuels the ties that bind\, whether in relationships\, business\, or everyday interactions. Most of us\, however\, have never been taught the fundamental skills of communication\, or how to best represent our true selves. Effective communication is as important to our well-being and happiness as the food we put into our bodies. It can be either healthy and nourishing or toxic and destructive. Thich Naht Hanh delivers a powerful path to happiness through mastering life’s most important skill. \nPlease read chapters 5 and 6 for our September meeting. \nThe sangha has funds to help you purchase the book if you need them. All are welcome!\nUU Society of Schenectady | 1221 Wendell Ave.\, Schenectady\, NY 12308 \nThich Nhat Hanh has established a tradition\, on the eve of the Lunar New Year\, of offering the sangha a simple poetic couplet in calligraphy that can inspire and nurture our mindfulness practice throughout the year. For the Year of the Dragon\, 2024\, Spacious Mind\, Inclusive Heart have been offered for our practice. These verses seem particularly relevant to the times in which we find ourselves. As Sr. Chan Duc wrote: “ . . . we have a chance to look at how much room there is in our heart and how much space there is in our mind. We need a spacious mind in order to deepen our understanding and with more understanding we grow the capacity of heart to include all.” \n***** \nRichard Brady (True Dharma Bridge) is a retreat leader\, writer\, educational consultant\, and coordinator of the Wake Up Schools. He is a founder of the Mindfulness in Education Network\, an international organization with 1\,700 participants. In 2001\, he received lamp transmission from Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh to be a Dharma teacher in his tradition with a special focus on cultivating mindfulness in young people. In 2008 Richard’s spouse Elisabeth Dearborn\, True Lotus Color\, and he founded the Mountains and Rivers Mindfulness Community in southeast Vermont\, US\, where they now live. Richard has been a friend and support to Kingfisher Sangha for many years and we welcome him back for this Day of Mindfulness. \n***** \nPlease bring with you:\n* a cushion if you use one for meditation\n* a vegetarian lunch\n* a yoga mat and/or blanket for total relaxation\n* layered clothes and socks. Please join us as we gather to read and discuss Sutras\, chants\, practice Touching the Earth\, recite the Five Mindfulness Trainings\, and other practices in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh. If you have a copy of the book Chanting From the Heart\, please bring it. Don’t worry if you don’t! \nYou can find the Zoom link in the last Sangha email newletter. \nOur next meeting is on November 4. We will collect dana for the Deepening the Practice gathering to help cover the cost of renting the space. Please RSVP each month to Linda at revlin23@gmail.com if you plan to attend. All are invited to the Kingfisher Book Group. Learn about the practice and share with others in the sangha. As we blend our insights\, our understanding grows. As we share build and strengthen our connections. The Book Group meets on Zoom on the third Wednesday of the month\, at 10am! The link for the next Zoom meeting is: \n\nPlease see the Kingfisher Sangha email newsletter for the Zoom link.\nIn November we will begin reading Unshakeable by Jo-ann Rosen. Please read the first two chapters. A holistic system for gaining and maintaining the stability of mind needed for personal and social transformation\, even in the midst of trauma—with simple\, body-based exercises grounded in neuroscience and mindfulness\, inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh. Time and time again\, even in places where trauma is commonplace\, Rosen has seen that a regulated nervous system allows an individual to move from overwhelm and despair to stability and engagement. The Plum Village approach to well-being cultivates resilience while recognizing the unique social and ecological challenges of our times. \nThe sangha has funds to help you purchase the book if you need them.
