Exploratory Group: Incarceration and Mental Health

The experience of the incarceration of their beloved son has led Barb and Tom Maier to propose the formation of an exploratory group to expand awareness of this country’s criminalization of individuals with serious and persistent mental illness. Incarcerated individuals with serious mental illness live under conditions that worsen their illnesses: no daylight or exercise, extraordinarily poor diet, punitive treatment for behaviors out of their control, “This horrible stain on our nation’s soul” affects an estimated 6 out of 10 prisoners and their families.

The committee would look deeply at the topic of criminal justice and behavioral health systems and practices and investigate areas where the Kingfisher Sangha can offer possible support such as education and awareness, placing Thich Nhat Hanh’s book in jails, or holding demonstrations/prayer vigils.
